Chia seeds are small seeds that originated from the Salvia Hispanica plant and are native to Guatemala and Southern Mexico. They were a stable in Mesoamerican civilizations, specifically Maya and Aztec cultures. Anthropologists have learned that Aztec warriors would put chia seeds in their gums before battles to help with sustaining energy. The word "chia" is a Nahuatl word which means "oily" and was derived from the word "strength".
On a nutritional level, chia seeds are packed with vitamins, minerals, protein, and fat. They are a great source of B vitamins, vitamin E and A. Meaning the help support energy production, eye health, and can reduce inflammation in the body. They also contain magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium, and copper. Which supports thyroid health, energy levels, and other bodily processes.
Chia seeds contain high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lower inflammation, decrease blood pressure, and lower the risk of heart issues. Omega-3 fatty acids also help to support cognitive functions, such as learning and memory. Research shows that omega-3s can help reduce our risk of Alzheimer's disease and other cognitive degenerative conditions. Lastly, omega-3s can help manage symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Try adding chia seeds to oatmeal, cookies, breads, muffins, making chia pudding, or sprinkle them on top of yogurt in the morning or evening
